Acronis vmProtect allows to create Exchange-Aware image-level backup of the virtual machine. Such backup contains a recoverable copy of the Exchange database, handles transactional logs appropriately and allows to recover selected mailboxes, messages, calendar items, etc. This option can be activated using "Application-aware backup settings". When the backup is started, before creating a snapshot of the virtual machine Acronis software runs the special script inside the virtual machine to get the meta data of the applications that are supported by this option. This meta-data will later be used to perform a recovery of the items without recovering the whole virtual machine.
The recovery of e-mails or mailboxes is performed using the following algorythm:
- In order to access the data inside the backup the virtual machine with Microsoft Exchange server is mounted from the backup.
- After the virtual machine is mounted and started then the software tries to extract the required data from inside this mounted virtual machine using Microsoft Exchange API.
- After the required data is accessed and extracted the selected mailboxes & mailboxes' content are saved to the specified destination as an Acronis vmProtect 9 self-extractible (.exe) archive.
- The file can be run on any machine which has Microsoft Outlook (2003+) installed in order to extract the e-mails and other items in .pst format.
